Changes are coming!

In mid-December I announced to my current clients & friends that a few changes were coming to Sarah Shah Portraits. Today, I'm excited to be able to announce those changes to you!

Friday my new blogsite will be launched and it will showcase my new logo!!

The website will be staying at www.sarahshahportraits.com but the look and feel will be different. It will have more of a blog feel, but you will still be able to place your orders and view galleries through the site.

My hosting company said that the downtime should be minimal, not more than a few minutes. If you try to hop over to my site during the switch it will come up unavailable, please try again in 10 minutes.

Since we are expecting ice and/or snow anytime now, I thought this image was appropriate.

My niece turns ONE this weekend! I cannot believe how much she's changed over her first year and I'm so blessed that I was able to capture her through it.

this FAMILY!!

The kids gave their parents the gift of custom photography by me for Christmas. It's a thoughtful gift that not many thinking about giving.

This was my first time photographing such a large group of adults but it went great. They were so relaxed, fun, and up for anything. :)

After their session, we had some brownies Jennifer made (delicious!) & tea and watched some soccer. It was just like being at home (hubby has soccer on all the time).

Thank you so much for being such a great group of people. I had a fun time and hope you did too.

This one was a struggle for sure. I tried to go out of the box and I'm not 100% sure I even like this.

My try at off camera flash. The flash directly behind the star. So instead of the shadow coming from my direction it's opposite, and coming towards me.

Lovely dust in the air too.

I'm currently going through this family's session images and I'm just in love with the Mom & Dad. I love how in love these two are, how much looking at them makes me smile, and how much the colors they wore really pops against the dormant tree that look like they have ice on them.

I don't share too much that isn't photography related here, since this is a photoblog but I feel that I have to share this.

Some of you might have seen the recent Oprah episode on calling/texting & driving. I recorded it had finally had the chance to watch it last night. Oprah has a few of the family members that have been affected by those that were calling/texting while driving and ended up in accidents killing either themselves or others. The whole episode was a slap-in-the-face-wake-up-call to me. I had never thought about how distracted I was if I was talking on the phone or even texting while driving. When I would hear the beep of an email, text, or ring of a call it had become an automatic reaction to reach over and dig through my purse, while driving, to see who it was or what they needed. After watching the episode I haven't used my phone in the car (actually I quit 3 days ago, when I saw the preview for the show); I put the ringtone on silent or just turn the phone off completely. A call, email, or text can wait 15 minutes for me to get home to respond.

I'm asking you to take a step back and consider this.

Look what we did today

If you know me good, you know I love crafts! Christmas time really brings out the crafter in me and having a toddler I can't help but get her involved and have some fun. If you have any kid-friendly crafts point me to them!

I read a lot of blogs. My Google Reader has probably close to 200 blogs, of course I have to pick and choose which posts to read based on time.

This craft I found on a blog I follow often. Jodie is a photographer and a Mommy that has an art room just for her kids!! She recently re-blogged this craft here. Today I decided we would have some craft fun and get a kick start on Valentine's decorations.

I chose 2 red crayons and Seema 1 picked pink.

Even with only 3 crayons to peel it ended up taking 20 minutes. Then I grated the crayons. Seema thought I cut my fingers with all the red coloring from the crayons.

With Jodie's recommendation, we did this part on our kitchen floor. Much easier to sweep than getting it out of the carpet! Seema put the crayon on the wax paper how she wanted. Then I put another piece of wax paper on top and melted it together with the iron.

Cut out heart shapes.

During Christmas I discovered hanging items from twine across this window as garland. Love how this came out! We added some heart shaped beads between the wax hearts.

They braved the cold, and I mean December 19th cold, for their portrait session. I love that they chose RED for their clothing. It was the perfect choice and really pop against the dormant trees.

A just turned ONE! The last time I photographed A, she was had just mastered sitting up... now she is crawling, walking, eating solids, has teeth, a lot more hair, and is going to be a big sister!! She's grown so much during her first year and I'm so glad that I was able to capture it!

A's Mom made this birthday banner, isn't it adorable? It's on my project list. :)

A newborn baby sleeping is so blissful. Doesn't she look just like a baby doll? (I was tickled when this pettiskirt was pulled out, it's the exact same kind and color as the one I have)

I fully enjoyed this in-home newborn session. R had just turn 4 weeks old and was so sweet, even when she only wanted her Mom.

Erin- Thank you for letting me capture some of R's sweet moments for you. Your Husband's Aunt's house was beautiful and the perfect setting for this session. I can't wait to show you the rest in about a week.

Meet Joe & his 3 daughters. For being an overcast, chilly Fall afternoon they brought such great smiles. I love this first one, but the family bond & closeness that is shown in the 2nd one makes it a favorite too.

Thanksgiving

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving yesterday. We had a nice Thanksgiving with family. Ate turkey, fixings, and pie. Played a couple board games.

Since we opted to not take part in Black Friday sales this year, I thought today I would share some of the Fall/Thanksgiving crafts that we did.

I found the idea for the leaf mask here. Of course ours came out a bit more scary than their version. Seema even screamed when she saw herself in the mirror.

With the leftover leaves that were already modge podge'd we hung on some twine across one of our windows.

I made these little yarn pumpkins from this yarn apple tutorial. Each of the kids that came out for my pumpkin patch portraits received one of these in their treat bags.

Lastly, this month we made marshmallow pilgrim hats to share with family and friends. One of my co-workers pointed out this recipe to me, so we had to try it. This is perfect for toddlers. Seema laid out the cookies and put the marshmallows in place, then I poured the chocolate and added the yellow buckle later.

Fashion Friday (on Sunday) | Wichita Kansas Photographer

Even though we are almost to the end of the Fall season, a request was made to keep the Fashion Friday section going for those with sessions coming in Spring.

When dressing your family for a portrait session, keep in mind the time of year and the location. If your session is in Fall and you'll be surrounded by rich orange, reds, and yellow leaves it will be best to go with a main color other than those. Or if your session is in Winter and you'll be were the trees have no leaves and the sky is a white or gray, you will want to stay away from whites, grays, blacks, and browns as your main colors. Patterned clothing can include these colors but if you really want to stand out from the background thing COLOR.

This week's Fashion Friday showcases a grown family. Mom, Dad, grown siblings, and their spouses (or significant other). You will notice that the main colors are blue, gray, and black. Then for a splash of color fuchsia and teal were added in (watch your colors shades to make sure they don't clash when put together).

The key to this session was making sure the boys knew that this was not going to be a boring session, that we were going to have fun. They know B, whose family was photographed at this location last year, and seeing his photographs gave them a sense of what their session would be like... some poses, and a lot of just being themselves.

Meet K, he's 5. He's my third five year old to photograph this Fall. With each one I've noticed how much I love this age. At five, you are ok with sitting still, don't like to follow direction but will, and have so much personality. K's personality so bubbly, fun, and silly. He had me laughing through most of the session. And I love that he (and his Sister) have red hair!!

I was so excited to meet up with this family! They had their Christmas portraits taken last November, it was so cold, and we had their session in "the studio". So when their Mom emailed me that she wanted to have this year's portraits outside I was so happy to a) meet up with them and see how much the kids have grown; b) experience the Fall foliage with them.

I love Fall and pretty much everything that comes along with it. Trips to the pumpkin patch, I've been 6 times this month. Pumpkin spice lattes, bought some and made some. Fall festivals, which include craft fairs and bundling up. Scented candles, I love creamy nutmeg from Bath & Body Works. Colors of the leaves on and off the trees. Sweaters, jeans, and boots.

This year I went a bit overboard on the pumpkins, but in my defense I wanted to have them all the up the steps to our front door. I've seen it in so many magazines over the past two years and I wanted that. So I have ELEVEN!! A nice, big round, flat one that cost way more than we should have paid for it but I just had to have it. Then Seema had to get 1 from that same pumpkin patch and 4 minis from the other pumpkin patch. And we ended up with a few pie size ones too.

The Fall foliage wreath was made by me. I like crafts, too.

We went to a pumpkin party earlier this month and forgot our pumpkins! We got halfway there and realized we didn't have them with us. LOL We visited and had fun anyways.

Today I let Seema paint a few of the pumpkins on the porch. She loves painting so this was right up her alley. I had to trick her to get her inside because she didn't want to stop and would have painted all my pumpkins.

She told me the middle one has teeth.

I met up with this family of FOUR at the pumpkin patch! Last year at the pumpkin patch L was an only child and now she's a big sister. Every time her Mom and I talk about our toddlers I am amazed at how awesome this little girl is. She's so smart and fully potty trained (at the age of 2!).

I'm in love with this first one.

There's no doubt that they are brother and sister. This image just cracks me up!

L wasn't too fond of the camera a first but her little brother just loved it. I've never had a baby that loved looking at the camera as much as him.

Both kids and their dog are monkeys for Halloween this year! How adorable are these costumes? I'm going to be checking out Babies R' Us next year for costumes.

This was my first time meeting and photographing this little beauty and I can't think of a more fun place than the pumpkin patch. Normally I see Moms, Aunts, Grandmas, Sisters at sessions but she came with her Daddy. It was so sweet! I still can't believe how fast she could run at only 1 years old. My daughter didn't start walking until 15 months so this was a bit of a change for me, but what a fun age!

First up is a little girl that I have had the pleasure of photographing 3 times. We originally met at the pumpkin patch last year. She was so cute then and at her fairy session, I could wait to meet up with her again. This time she brought along her big brother to be photographed with her. Both are just great kids and hope to continue to watch them grow into adulthood.

I feel like I'm in the middle of running a marathon and I'm counting my steps to keep me going.

I have two portrait sessions this weekend, which I am so excited about! First, is a family that was one of my first clients last year. Her kids are ADORABLE and I can't wait to see how much they've grown. Second, is a family that I know through a grade school friend. They have a 5 year old boy that has the brightest personality and I can't wait to spend some time with him again, and a 7 week old girl.

We were invited to two parties this weekend to celebrate Fall and Halloween. Seema will be debuting her costume at both! We have to prepare her for the big night next week, since she's really not to keen on wearing her animal ears.

Pumpkin patch portraits will be hitting the blog and galleries this weekend. Those that came out this year be sure to check your email Sunday for your password.

We spent a beautiful morning at the local independent AA baseball field. This was my first time at a baseball field and it was an awesome pick for portraits! Especially since this family brought their Hawkeyes jerseys.

Solid colors are one of the easiest ways to go. Solid doesn't always mean that you have to match. You could even have each member of the family wear a different color that compliments each other and would look great. Have fun with your clothing, and try to bring in elements that showcase your personality. :)

I love teal and purple with grey, they are just the right pop of color!

This was my first Fall session of the year! And it was a perfect one to kick off the season. We endured the dewy, morning grass and just fell in love with the light.

Little "L" just turned a year old. She wasn't sure of the camera at first but finally warmed up. She discovered the ball I had brought and how fun it is to run down a hill. I absolutely adore this hat on her!

Meet Colleen

This is Colleen. She's going to be my assistant during the Fall season and will be accompanying me to all of the sessions, as well as the pumpkin patch. Colleen is great with kids and I think she's going to be the perfect assistant to help me. I can't wait for all of you that have booked sessions to meet her.

We had a blast during her portrait session. I don't think I've laughed that hard in a long time!

She loves to cook and wants to go to culinary school. To me that sounds like a lot of fun and I hope she does it. She also blogs recipes, here.

This vacation hit the spot in so many ways. It was just what we needed as a family and as a couple. I know I was just so burnt out of everything and I needed to get away from it ALL! No stay-cation would have done what this trip did.

We went on a cruise to the Bahamas and HAD A BLAST! This was our first cruise and our first time in the Bahamas. It was our daughter's first time at the beach. (We really want to go on another cruise in the future and would love to hear your stories.)

Nothing beats sailing away from Miami and seeing a beautiful sunset.

The stops were Port Lucaya/Freeport, Nassau, and Great Stirrup Cay. Three fun filled days of sun, sand, and smiles. Even though I ended up coming home with a slight burn my baby is so tan!

No matter what was going on or where we were she always got her nap in. Her airplane seat, the stroller on the beach, Mom & Dad's arms at the airport (that one was 2 hours!), in the stroller at restaurants, etc.

I was banned from taking my dSLR on the beach, by my husband. In the end I'm so glad he didn't let me take it. The sand was just like big flakes for salt and stuck to everything. This was different than the sand I remember in CA or FL. These were all taken with our point & shoot little camera.

UNPLUGGING for this whole week! Yep, that's right. No phone calls, no emails, no twitter, no facebook, nothing except maybe a bit of tv but not sure we'll get that much in anyways. I'm so connected that I'm expecting this to be a HUGE withdrawal. ha! Taking this week off from everything to spend some much needed time with my daughter and husband before I gear up for the busy Fall season.

More information on session types
This year I am offering mini sessions, as well as regular sessions, for family portraits. Either of these sessions are great options! I am offering a Christmas Magic package for the family portrait sessions. This package includes a variety of print sizes and comes with the option of adding on custom designed holiday cards or one digital image to use for your holiday cards. The add-on options are only available in conjunction with the purchase of the Christmas Magic package or these regular packages: the RUBY, the PEARL, or the DIAMOND. To see what each of these regular packages includes please click here. I will be posting information on the Christmas Magic package and add-ons in the next couple days right here on my blog.

You might be wondering what the difference is between a mini session and a regular session, so here's the break down.

Mini Sessions:
* Choose either a traditional session at Oak Park in Riverside or Friends University or an urban session in downtown Wichita.
* The session fee is $60 and covers the photographer's time and talent during and after the session.
* These sessions will last about 40 minutes.
* 10-12 proofs will be shown.

Regular Sessions:
*Choose any location that you would like, we can work together to find what location will be best for your portraits and your family.
* The session fee is $100 and covers the photographer's time and talent during and after the session, and a $50 print credit towards your print purchase.
* These sessions last about 1-2 hours.
* At least 25 proofs will be shown.

After analyzing what size prints most of your orders contain, I have decided to bring back print packages but this time they work a bit differently. If you know you will like one of the below session packages, you will need to "lock in" that package by ordering it when you schedule your session.

This works just like the session fee. For your regular portrait session you'd pay a $100 session fee up front to hold your spot and for my time & talent during and after your session. When your proofs are done I email you a $50 credit code to enter when checking out. For these session packages you will need to do a bit more thinking (I know, sorry) but it will work out a lot better. And even save you money in the long run with the packages that have an additional % off extra prints that aren't included in the package. When your proofs are done I will email you a code for the amount of the session package that you "locked in" prior to your session. If you purchased a session package that includes an amount off additional a la carte prints you will receive that code too.

With the introduction of session packages my a la carte options have been narrowed down to just the basics. Prints can be ordered in wallets, 5x7 and smaller, 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, and 20x24. Custom sizes are also still available, just ask! All speciality items (storyboards, holiday cards/announcements, albums, and others) can be only ordered as an add-on to one of these session packages.

Fresh veggies are the best, but growing them and harvesting them from your own garden in your backyard is even better!

This was our first year to have our own garden. I'm still shocked that I didn't kill it. I kill every other plant I have, but these tomato and green pepper plants, and onions survived me. Thank you, GOD!

Our daughter just loves the garden. She loves to get her sandbox shovels and dig around in it and get her toes all dirty. She's a tomboy in the making, for sure. She likes to see if there's any tomatoes, or as she calls them... apples, or green peppers ready to eat right off the vine.

Yesterday we were just harvesting though. We brought in 7 tomatoes, 3 peppers, and a bunch of onions. So I had to make salsa tonight and it was soooo good.

Product Showcase: the STORYBOARD

This is the latest storyboard that a client ordered. I haven't had a 9 image one printed before and I just love this! This particular one is 12x12 inches and is mounted on styrene board. Styrene is a plastic mounting board that is 2mm thick. All of my images that are ordered larger than 8x10 are mounted on styrene for added durability and preservation.

I loved getting to see these little girls (some of you I've had sessions with before, it was great seeing how much your little ones have grown!). Erin has so patiently waited on me for this sneak peek, and I thank you! I have been dying to work on your boys' photos for the past week.

First we have big brother. He and my daughter enjoy their play dates, well as much as a couple of two years olds can... they pretty much ignore each other while he plays with her toys and she plays with his little brother.

This is the 2nd set of brothers I have photographed, but the first boy under 6 months. I was so honored to have a 1 month old baby boy that I could put my bear hat on.

Since I'm waiting on some calibration software to arrive on my doorstep I feel I have time to burn today. I can't edit any of baby Trace or his brother Ty session pictures until that software gets here so I feel so BORED and DISAPPOINTED! I get 2 extra days off and I'm bored and disappointed... what's wrong with this picture. lol Hubby told me "go blog or something" so here I sit.

I saw this post on Jodie's blog and had to join in.

I sometimes...
- go to bed at 9 pm.
- cry in the shower.
- make lists just to check the things off.
- don't get to laundry for a week.

I always...
- love the first 30 minutes after I walk in the door and see my daughter and hug her.
- have good intentions, even though they might not work out.
- fill up my wishpot and amazon wish list but seldom buy anything from them
- will love coming home. Traveling is nice, but nothing beats being back in your own home.
- need spell check and proofing help.
- loose things! (keys, important papers, and sometimes my mind)

I never...
- get through a day unplugged.
- get through a week without at least one to-do list made.
- eat mushrooms.
- whistle because I can't do it right.
- host a party without having everything planned out.

This 3 month old's session was the first in my little studio since the cold winter weather has past. It was a nice, cool break from being out in the hot weather. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love on location sessions; some times its just nice to be inside.

I hope you're enjoying seeing more of my family life. I have enjoyed picking up my camera almost daily to capture the moments of my daughter's every day life.

She sleeps in a toddler bed.
She drinks from a regular cup.
She climbs everything possible, runs, and attempts to jump.
So I guess it's time we give potty training a try. Any advice as we enter this new challenge in toddlerhood would be nice.

Lately, I've been trying to "embrace the grain" as Jodi Allen has once said. To me this is hard; I like crisp, non-grain-y images, but I seem to like the grain in this one. I think it adds to it.

My most favorite part of every day is story time before bed. It's just me and Seema and I love it! With being gone from her all day I do feel like I miss out on a lot of things she's doing and this makes up for it and makes me feel all warm inside, even if it's only 20 minutes.

The book limit is 3; otherwise we'd be there all night. We always end with Goodnight Moon. I love that book, and she likes to point out the different things in the room.

I just love watching babies grow into toddlers. They change so much and develop into independent little ones so fast. I have been documenting this little one's life since she was still in her Momma's womb. The past 5 months have went by so quickly, I can't believe that she's already 6 months old and sitting up on her own!

Normally I don't allow any cameras (video or still) to be used during a portrait session. A point and shoot camera's automatic flash does not mesh with my camera. But this time I allowed one snapshot of me in action to be taken.

If you haven't yet had the pleasure of experiencing a portrait session with me, I do get in weird positions just to get the shot I want.

We got our first pet EVER in this house last night. She's a boxer turtle and as cute as a reptile pet can be. Based on what I've read today I'm guessing she's about 9 years old.

My daughter is still not to sure about her. She continues to call her a frog, until corrected, and won't go closer than the rim of the bucket. But will tell her good night and she's protective of her at a distance.

Their Grandparents joined us for their portrait session and they are so youth at heart. I loved getting to know them and seeing their love for each other. They are approaching their 50th anniversary and I loved seeing that he couldn't keep his eyes off her even after all those years. <3

How much does your child like to swing? Mine asks to all the time. Even if she goes to the park in the morning she wants to go again in the evening. She's becoming more daring too; she likes to pull her legs up into the swing and also hang forward or backwards like the little monkey she is. We so need to get a swing for the backyard!

Terri's daughter, Becky (@wordsofbecky), surprised her Mom the week before the wedding by telling her that I would be photographing their wedding. Becky kept this a secret from her Mom until 1 week before the wedding when I meet with them.

I had the pleasure of documenting Russ and Terri's wedding day! This was the first wedding I have ever photographed and I really enjoyed seeing their day unfold and meeting all of their close family. I loved how Terri had pre-wedding jitters, and then how elated they both looked during the ceremony.

To date this was my favorite and most fun session! I had a blast running after these cute little kiddos. The browns and blues really made their icy blue colored eyes pop!

I like capturing the simply moments best; a big brother comforting his little brother, a Dad helping his sons, and a family being themselves. This style is truly shown through out this portrait session.

I have been very busy this past December. I had the opportunity to photography my first newborn baby at 7 days old and I had my second maternity session.

Ms. A is an adorable bundle of pink. I can't wait to see her at her 1 month photo session. I bet she's grown so much.

This pregnant mama is my Sister. We had a lot of fun with her session and she truly is glowing in her last month pregnant. I can't believe that I am going to be an Auntie this month.

The Spirit of Giving - The winner is...

First, I want to thank everyone that send in an amazing story of a deserving family you know. I was so touched to read though your stories.

The winner is the Cage family.

Here is a snippet of the nomination email I received, and why I think they are truly deserving of this gift:

"This family has been through an extremely tough time, and they are in need of a little time for themselves as a family. The photos you take will be an important part of their grieving process, and will allow them to begin new lives together after Harry’s [Father and Husband] death. They are a beautiful family, smart, exceptionally creative, and wonderfully full of life. "

I will be contacting this family by phone tomorrow to let them know they won is contest and who nominated them. I will also be contacting the nominator with details.

Enjoying The Weather

I cannot believe that it's near 60 degrees at the end of December. We decided to savor some of that beautiful sunshine with walks and playtime at the park. This is my 19 month old daughter trying to avoid the camera.

I am so excited to be able to join in the spirit of giving this year. I am teaming up with Giving is Awesome and 360+ other photographers internationally to offer my photography services to a deserving family.

You know someone. You know someone who's experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can't afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family's spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography -- $300 worth, to be exact. Whether it's canvas or albums, or prints for Grandma, it's in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a $100 print credit. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be, people?

Upcoming Holidays

I am packaging up my last three pre-Christmas orders tonight. I will be delivering your orders to you between now and Sunday.

I want to wish you all a very merry and blessed Christmas. I hope your holidays are filled with family and fun. This time of year makes me so excited!

Sarah Shah Portraits will be closed for some much needed time off with friends and family from December 20nd through December 28th. If you call or email, I will get back to you as soon as I return to work on December 29th.

Posting a few "sneak peeks" from the holiday photo session I did with my 18 month old daughter. Lately it's been very hard for me to get a photograph of her looking at the camera. She knows what it is and knows I want her to look at it and does the opposite.
